WASHINGTON/KABUL: Following two days of negotiations in Qatar, the US State Department stated on Monday that US officials informed the Taliban in Afghanistan that Washington was amenable to technical conversations regarding economic stability and discussions regarding the fight against drug trafficking.

Their representatives brought up the easing of travel and other limitations on Taliban commanders, as well as the repatriation of assets held overseas by the Afghan Central Bank, according to the Kabul government.

Additionally, it contained encouraging remarks regarding better financial data, including lower inflation, and decreased opium poppy cultivation as a result of the 2022 prohibition. In response, the US side “voiced openness to continue dialogue on counter-narcotics,” according to the statement. Additionally, the US side was prepared “for a technical dialogue regarding issues relating to economic stabilization soon.”

Since the government, which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), took power, the majority of the Taliban’s commanders need UN approval to travel abroad, and sanctions have damaged Afghanistan’s banking industry.

After the seized power, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York froze almost $7 billion in cash belonging to the Afghan central bank.

A US-funded audit of the AC bank was unsuccessful in getting Washington to support the restoration of trust fund assets.
